As in the production of ordinary corn syrup, the sugar is broken down to glucose by digestive enzymes. This simple process provides glucose to cells in the body that need it. However, due to the lack of calories and other nutrients in regular sugar, this type of sugar is not as readily absorbed as other sugar types.
