Enzymes are a group of proteins and other substances that have an important role in the functioning of living organisms. Enzymes are made up of catalysts, which are proteins with which the enzymes catalyze or break down. These include peptides (which are chains of amino acids); lipids (which are fats); non-protein precursors (which are sugars); and nucleic acids (which are DNA and RNA). In the manufacturing and industrial processes, enzymes are often used as activators of certain chemical reactions and may also be used to aid in the decomposition and reuse of industrial waste materials.
The growing demand for enzymes from the pharmaceutical industry for the preparation of various drugs is primarily fueling the growth of the enzymes market. The increasing prevalence of the various chronic disease is creating demand for healthcare need which is again driving demand for enzymes. According to the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes are the leading causes of death and disability in the United States. They are also leading drivers of the nation’s $3.8 trillion in annual health care costs. Furthermore, growing demand from end-user industries such as food and beverage, biofuel, animal feed, and home cleaning is further projected to propel the growth of the enzymes market.
North America is expected to gain significant growth over the forecast period and this is attributed to the high demand for biofuel in the region due to the growing demand for renewable sources of energy. According to the report from Center for Sustainable Systems, in 2019, there were 200 ethanol refineries and 102 biodiesel production plants in the U.S. The U.S. biodiesel production facilities operated at 68% capacity in 2019. Moreover, in 2019, 10% of U.S. vehicle fuel consumption (by volume) was ethanol and over 98% of U.S. gasoline contains ethanol.
